Why Haircare Needs to Be Natural

In our never-ending search for lustrous, shiny hair, most of us will have tried all kinds of shampoos, conditioners and masks.

Yet, as we get caught up in that quest for glamorous, supermodel-worthy locks, we often forget about the importance of natural haircare.

The problem is, many popular shampoos and conditioners - most of which line our supermarket shelves - are laden with toxic chemicals and nasties. When we hop into the shower in the morning and wash our hair, our skin absorbs these same ingredients, which then work their way into our bloodstream.

Scary, isn’t it? Yet, when you put it like that, it seems reasonable to think twice before smothering ourselves - or, worse still, our kids - with chemical ingredients. After all, looking after our bodies isn’t just about eating healthy foods and exercising, it’s also about considering the products we apply to our skin, our body’s largest organ.

Thankfully, here at Let Nature Provide, we are huge believers in natural beauty and haircare. We believe that your beauty regime shouldn’t just promise results, but that it should also be kind to the environment and contain only ingredients that you recognise.

That’s why we’re so proud to bring you the award-winning NOAH range. Each and every single product by NOAH contains only the very best natural ingredients, including pure essential oils extracted from plants and flowers using ancient techniques.

However, if you’re feeling worried about the products you use, then here are all those nasty ingredients that you need to look out for - and steer clear of:

Haircare Ingredients to Avoid:

SLS: Also known as sodium laurel / laureth sulfate (SLS), sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium laurel sulfate, sodium dodecylsulfate, sulfuric acid, sodium salt sulfuric acid, A12-00356, Akyposal SDS, Aquarex ME, and Aquarex methyl. Most of us know to steer clear of those dreaded SLSs, one of the main ingredients in detergents and cleaning products, which include those to clean out engines! This ingredient, aside from the worrying health concerns (it has been linked to skin irritations and even certain cancers), can make your hair dry and damaged. After all, if you’d clean an engine with it, why would you let it touch your hair…?

Isopropyl alcohol: This nasty ingredient (commonly found in anti-freeze) is used to strip away oils, meaning that it can damage your hair and cause it to break. It may also cause headaches, dizziness and even nausea and vomiting. Yet, in spite of this, it’s found in many hair sprays and hair gels…

Proplyene glycol (PG): One of the biggest culprits of scalp irritation, this nasty substance can break down healthy hair proteins while making our hair appear shiny and lustrous. In other words, it lulls us into a false sense of security! This ingredient often pops up in shampoos, conditioners, hair dyes and styling products.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): Often used in oven cleaners to dissolve dirt, grime and grease, PEG is often found in shampoos. However, it can strip away moisture and nutrients and may even be a possible carcinogen.

Parabens such as propylparaben, benzylparaben: Commonly used in shampoos as a preservative, these ingredients are potentially toxic for us humans, disrupting hormones and even potentially causing cancer.

Phthalates: In the last few years, there has been growing concern about our use of phthalates (they have been linked to breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, fertility issues and even autism), with some so concerned that they have banned them from children’s toys in America. However, they are often still found in hair products.

Sulfates (including Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate): Used in haircare to strip dirt and grime from your hair. However, they work so well that they affect our hair’s natural oils (sebum) which is used for moisture.

What Can I Do?

If you’re worried about what’s in your haircare, then don’t worry! You don’t have to carry on reaching for chemically-laden products.

Instead, embrace the more natural hair care ranges, such as our NOAH range, which works with your own personal hair type. These ranges have targeted natural ingredients which can work with your hair type, rather than against it - think naturally moisturising argan oil for drier hair types, or purifying green tea and basil for oilier hair types.
